Unit 6: Plane Geometry & Angle Relationships

ResourcesCurriculum

Overview

Ever wondered how to teach the principles of plane geometry and angle relationships in an engaging way to your 7th-grade students?

In this unit plan, students will first learn about scale drawings and scale factors. Later on, they will build on this to learn about calculating the area of triangles and circles. Lastly, they will learn about angle pair relationships and the Triangle Inequality Theorem.

Each lesson helps students master the unit through artistic, interactive guided notes, check for understanding, and culminates with a real-life example that explores how these geometric concepts are applied in various situations.

It's an exciting way to teach plane geometry and angle relationships comprehensively, meeting the 7th-grade Common Core Standards effectively.

Learning Objectives

After this unit, students will be able to:

  • Calculate scale factors and use them to solve problems involving scale drawings, scale models, and map scales.
  • Calculate the area of triangles using the appropriate formula.
  • Calculate the area and circumference of circles using the appropriate formulas and understand their relationship.
  • Find the area of composite figures made up of various polygons.
  • Identify and apply the relationships between supplementary, complementary, vertical, and adjacent angles to solve for unknown angles in plane geometry.
  • Apply the Triangle Inequality Theorem to determine if sets of side lengths can form a triangle.
  • Identify and describe the two-dimensional figures resulting from the cross sections of various three-dimensional figures.
Prerequisites

Before this unit, students should be familiar with:

  • Understanding of basic geometric shapes such as triangles, rectangles, squares, and circles
  • Knowledge of basic angle types (right, acute, obtuse)
  • Familiarity with basic measurement units for length, area, and angles
  • Understanding of basic algebraic equations and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work with basic geometric formulas (such as perimeter and area of rectangles and triangles)
