This Valentine's Day-themed pixel art activity uses Google Sheets to engage students as they simplify expressions with positive numbers. With two levels of difficulty and immediate feedback, they’ll enjoy uncovering a mystery image while honing their skills in expressions aligned with relevant math standards. The resource is perfect for independent practice or group activities, making math enjoyable and interactive for your class!
***This resource contains expressions with positive numbers only; students will not need to apply negative integer rules to solve. To find the version of combining like terms with positive and negative integers, click here.
Each activity is a self-checking Google Sheet with a unique image. Students practice a series of problems, and get immediate feedback as they go. Correct answers turn green and incorrect answers stay red. As students type in correct answers, a mystery picture appears. The Google Sheets are all self checking & digital, so it can easily be assigned through Google Classroom or any online learning platform.
Level 1 involves simplifying expressions that result in 1-2 terms (answer is in the form of ax+c or ax+by). Level 2 involves simplifying longer expressions that result in 2-3 terms (answer is in the form of ax+by+c). Both levels involves positive and negative integer coefficients. You can assign students one or both levels as they each contain a separate mystery image.
In addition, an optional printable PDF worksheets (2 pages) with questions and work space is included for students to show work on paper prior to typing in solutions on the google sheets.

The two Google sheets are themed after Valentine's Day, but the image is versatile that it can really be used at any time in the school year.
