Engage your students with these winter themed Pixel Art Activities, made up of Google Sheets, to practice calculating the volume of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths.
This product contains 2 Pixel Art Google Sheets - level 1 contains rectangular prisms with whole number edge lengths while level 2 contains rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths (some proper fractions and mixed fractions).
This pixel art activity covers the 6th grade common core standard:
6.G.A.2 Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas v=lwh and v= bh to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

Each of the two pixel arts is a self-checking Google Sheet themed after winter and Valentine's Day. However, the image is versatile enough that it may be used at any time in the school year. Students practice a series of problems, and get immediate feedback as they go. Correct answers turn green and incorrect answers stay red. As students type in correct answers, a mystery picture appears. The Google Sheets are all self checking & digital, so it can easily be assigned through Google Classroom or any online learning platform.
There's no prep required. This is great for virtual or in person learning!
There's 2 pixel art Google Sheets, with 18 problems total, along with an answer key, pdf question sheet and directions for reference:
Google Sheet #1 (9 problems): Calculate Unit Rates - Whole Number Solutions
Google Sheet #2 (9 problems): Calculate Unit Rates - Decimal Solutions
Answer Key (PDF)
Optional PDF question sheet (2 pages)
A printable PDF version of the questions has been added so students can solve the problems and show their work on paper prior to entering the answers on the pixel art google sheets. (This part of the activity is optional, some teachers may choose to use the pixel art google sheet directly without this PDF).
Note: Students would need access to a digital device to complete the pixel art activity. Please feel free to look at the preview of the product to ensure that the questions are the appropriate level for your students! :)
You can assign the Google Sheets separately or both at once depending on your preferences and skills that your students are working on.
