Procedure

Introduction

As a hook, ask students why understanding how to divide whole numbers by whole numbers is important in real life situations. Refer to the last page of the guided notes as well as the FAQs below for ideas.

Use the first page of the guided notes to introduce the concept of dividing multi-digit whole numbers by whole numbers. Walk through the steps of long division including dividing, multiplying, subtracting, and bringing down. Students will fill in the blanks on the page as you explain. Emphasize the importance of following each step carefully to arrive at the correct quotient. Refer to the FAQ below for a walk through on this, as well as ideas on how to respond to common student questions.

Using the example provided (pg 1 of guided notes), model the steps of long division. Then have students try out the remaining examples on the page as a group. Based on student responses during the introduction, reteach any concepts that students may need extra help with. If there is a wide range of proficiency levels in the class, consider pulling out students for reteaching while more advanced students can begin working on the guided notes.

Practice

Have students practice dividing whole numbers by whole numbers using the practice coloring worksheet provided in the resource (pg. 2-4). The second page of the guided notes contains problem sets with spaces for students to divide and check their solution. The third page of the guided notes contains a maze activity. Walk around to answer student questions.

Fast finishers can dive into the color by number activity (pg. 4) for extra practice. You can also assign it as homework for the remainder of the class.

Real-Life Application

Using the last page of the guided notes, bring the class back together, and introduce the concept of using long division of whole numbers in real-life situations such as dividing a large number of items into smaller groups, allocating resources in a fair manner, or calculating how many days a certain amount of supplies will last. Refer to the FAQ for more ideas on how to teach it!

Students reflect on the real life applications of dividing whole numbers as well as complete a short self assessment on how confident they feel about this math topic.
