Learning Objectives
After this unit, students will be able to:
- Identify and plot points on a coordinate plane in all four quadrants.
- Calculate the distance between two points on a coordinate plane.
- Create polygons by plotting points on a coordinate plane.
- Calculate the area of triangles using the formula A = 1/2 * base * height.
- Calculate the area of parallelograms, trapezoids, and rectangles using the appropriate formulas.
- Determine the area of composite figures made up of rectangles, trapezoids, parallelograms, and triangles.
- Calculate the surface area of rectangular prisms.
- Identify 3D shape nets that can be folded to form rectangular prisms.
- Calculate the volume of rectangular prisms with whole number and fractional edge lengths using the formula V = l * w * h.
Prerequisites
Before this unit, students should be familiar with:
- Basic understanding of Cartesian coordinates and the concept of a coordinate plane
- Knowledge of basic geometry terms such as points, lines, angles, and shapes
- Understanding of how to calculate the area and perimeter of simple shapes like rectangles and triangles
- Ability to perform basic operations with fractions and decimals
- Familiarity with calculating the volume of cubes and rectangular prisms
